How Long should I get from a cartridge filter? My plaster pool is now 3 years old, and i've only used the BBB method. My filter is over sized so I only remove and clean 2 or 3 times a year with a garden hose. Should I use a filter cleaning solution or is water alone good enough?

Cartridges can last quite a while, many years, if you are gentle with them.
Rinsing off with water is fine. If the pressure after cleaning is several PSI above the original clean filter pressure it is time to do an overnight detergent soak (one cup of automatic dishwasher detergent for every five gallons of water).
