My pump runs for a second and then short circuits

What would be causing that?

Do you mean the breaker trips? My guess is you have a GFCI breaker and there is some moisture on a connector or within the pump body. The breakers are common failure items, but moisture is the most common cause of them tripping.

My recently replace spa pump was doing that after I had it for about a month. The pump had a defect and was replaced.
