multi-port filter valve chattering......

I have a friend with a jacuzzi filter with the multi-port valve on top of the filter for an above ground pool, that has been chattering occasionally. It seems to stop after a backwash, although the pressure before the backwash may not be necessarily all that high.

Any ideas on what might be happening here? He says he taken it apart a few years ago to repair a leak on the backwash port, but it has been working fine until this season.

Air is the most likely cause of a noisy multiport. Is there air in the pump strainer housing?

Could be a weak spring that allows the gate to rattle. It would get worse with a pressure increase. Might be worth rebuilding.
