Is there any benefit or reason to treat the pool with a weekly dose of some kind of a algecide? Before starting the BBB method I always was told to add this product weekly.

I've never used algaecide in the 3 years since I found TFP. It's added insurance, but not required. If you do use algaecide make sure it's polyquat 60.
If you keep your FC above min for your CYA there is no need for algaecide. A few people use it when they winterize as insurance but it's optional. No need to use it at all during the time the pool is open.
