I have

The size of your pool in gallons

12000 g oval, above ground, vinyl, cartridge filter.

On opening in the northeast late May,

How much initial shock do I add, and how many chlorine tablets,

and what other chemicals?

What is the best testing equip to buy?

Welcome to the forum! :lol:

Others will be along soon to suggest test kits. In the meantime, you need to post some test results so we can see what may or may not needs to be done. If you do not have very recent results, go ahead and get some from a pool store.....that'll get you started.

I recommend the TF-100 from TFTestKits.net. The Taylor K-2006 is also good.

Just at first, add 2 ppm of chlorine each evening, or, if you are going with tablets, one at a time should be enough.

There are a number of things that you might need to do, but that is impossible to say without having a full set of water test results.

In the mean time, as long as it will be less than a week before you can get test results, just add 2 ppm of chlorine each evening.
