Adding DE to a sand filter?

I've heard about doing this on this site somewhere. Is this a good suggestion?
How do you go about doing it?

As to the "how", there is this article in Pool School (see button top right.) As to "is this a good idea" opinions vary. There are a few threads on the subject, you can use the Google search at the lower left corner to find more, but this is a good one.

I and many others like to use it, some say it didn't really do anything for them, but if you follow the instructions, there really isn't any harm in trying it out.
