We added this product to our pool this year after opening before I found this site. We had used it last year and it did give the water a "softer" feel. Is this product o.k. to use or will it cause other problems?

perfectly OK...you now have borates in your water 
You may want to make sure it is at 50ppm to acheive the full benefit of borates...tftestkits.net sells borate test strips and the topic is covered in Pool School.

Is there a cheaper product that will give the same benefits? I think I added 20#'s for about 50 bucks.
yup...regular old Borax and muratic acid or you can use Boric Acid. I have ordered boric acid from the chemistrystore.com...with good results. www.poolcalculator can tell you how much product you will need.
