Solar Cover

I have heard that you can just use plastic from lowes as a solar cover instead of buying the kind they sale with bubbles. Is this true?

You mean just sheets of plastic? The solar cover bubbles serve two purposes - insulation and obviously they float. Sheets of plastic would probably not do either. The main purpose we have solar covers is to insulate/retain heat/prevent evaporation

Now, if Lowe's had a 12'x40' roll of bubble wrap, I might be interested.

Intrestingly Lowes does sell big rolls of bubble wrap..... they're in the pool department and they're called solar covers!
