new hayward sand filters

I've noticed from some of the pictures here, and also looked on haywards website, that their newer sand filters have a one piece body. Other than backwashing, how are these filters cleaned, or the sand replaced?

I have one that has a top mounted valve. To change the sand I believe you take the valve off the top and use a shop vac to suck the sand out.

All of those filters, top mount multi-port or side mount multi-port, have an opening in the top of about 8" diameter. The side mounts have a separate small black lid covering this opening. You have to do everything through that hole. It can be quite a pain sometimes, but it works.

Thanks for clearing that up. I also assume that with such a design, if anything internal gets damaged, you have to replace the whole filter.

No, but repair is a job for someone with long skinny arms.
