Want to check my filter, but how?

Below are some pics of my filter. The instructions seem to indicate that I twist the whole black section (filter valve) off the top separating it where it meets the beige tank. Is this correct?

Yes, the black portion is called a multi-port valve and it will unscrew just like yu say (although perhaps not easily.

A pool without a pressure guage is all guesswork. It is absolutley essential to operate your pool effectively. They're about 7-10 bucks.
 
Just to anticipate the next question -- you can pull the plug on the side of the multi (shown in the first pic) and replace it with the gauge :cool:

Also, be sure to take care of the o-ring and sealing area when reinstalling the multiport :)

While I'm at it, curse whomever plumbed your system :evil: Those barbed fittings are outdated and EVIL!! :rant:
