Above Ground Pump on In Ground Pool?

My pump started making a louder whiniing noise this week....it was replaced in '06 with what may be an above ground pool pump.
How can I tell if it's an above ground setup?...It's marked to fill with water before startring...is this a clue?
After opening the basket it takes a few minutes to get pumping.
If it is an above ground I think I'll not repair it and just get the proper pump.

My pump is labled Hayward model sp2807x10, which on searching for it I find it described as an inground pool pump.

A typical above ground pool pump will not startup properly if the pump is located above the surface of the pool water, regardless of how long you give it.
