It seems lately I have been having a large amount of water spiders in my pool skimmer basket. Is there anyway to prevent these?

From getting into your pool? No, there really isn't. It's starting to warm up and they are out hunting and doing spidery things. They simply venture onto your tile and end up in the water and can't get back out and then end up in your skimmer.
If you are one to leave the pool light on when it gets dark, you might try turning it off and see if that helps some. Wolf spiders and others similar to them that go out and hunt rather than spin webs and wait for prey will go after the insects that find your pool light attractive.
