Make your own bleach

I found this info on another forum that I frequent for purifying drinking water.

Can someone here verify if this would work as standard 6% bleach to use in my pool? If it will work, we can get the price of bleach down very low.

Here's the U-Tube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fsKUyObUIs

Thanks to anyone who can help.

But you'd be adding an unneeded step in the process. Just use the cal-hypo as it's intended in the pool. Just keep an eye on your calcium level.

Cal hypo, while easier to carry around and store than bleach, ends up costing more than either bleach or trichlor. See this post for price comparisons. All of the prices in that post are a little out of date, but the relative costs are still about the same as they were when that was written.

The units used to compare bleach to cal-hypo on that EPA web page are rather confusing/misleading. One pound of 73% cal-hypo is equivalent to about 1.4 gallons of 6% bleach (for equal chlorine content).

Thanks John & Jason for your responses.

I was confused about the measurements on the EPA page and how to compare that to 6% bleach.

I have followed the advice I have learned from this website for the past two years and my pool has been absolutely sparkling. I sure don't want to mess that up, but I thought if I could do it a little cheaper it would be good.

Thanks again,
Ray
