Is it possible to hook-up an intex swg to my in-ground pool. we are low on funds and need to do something. If I plumbed it in to my existing system how would it know, wouldn't it still work?

Welcome to TFP!
Yes this can be done. The Intex unit doesn't care where the water comes from. The main, fairly large, disadvantage is that the Intex SWG is not UL listed, so it is a code violation in most places to use it in this way. Also, keep in mind that the Intex instructions say to make sure the SWG is turned off any time someone is in the pool.

There is a lot of info on the unit here: Intex SWG
You can also do a search for intex (bottom left, google). We have lots of members with this SWG and they will be chiming in.

You're done SLAMing when:
1)You lose 1ppm or less FC overnight, & 2)You have .5ppm CC's or less, & 3)your water is clear.

what about the swg intex in conjunction with an ionizer

The ionizer does not have any effect on the SWG either way. On the other hand, we generally recommend not using ionizers.

The unit is marketed specifically for temporary(non-permanent) pools. IMHO don't think that there would be any point in UL listing, nor would it be a code violation if it were not permanently installed (ie, you don't hard wire it.) It is always a good legal point to recommend that ANY electrical device connected to a pool be de-energized when someone is in the pool. The lawyers at the other pool equipment suppliers are just lagging behind, or not as paranoid! The main, fairly large, disadvantage is that the Intex SWG is not UL listed, so it is a code violation in most places to use it in this way. Also, keep in mind that the Intex instructions say to make sure the SWG is turned off any time someone is in the pool.
