pressure reading on filter shows 40 even with filter off. when i turn filter on pressure goes to 52. is there something wrong with filter or gauge?filter and pump seem to operate properly.

The guage is broken....pretty common occurence. Most pool stores carry them....under $10.
temps are going to about 20 tonite. can i still run pump with gauge not reading properly until i get new one and how long should i run it to protect filter and pump tonite
It's fine to run it with a broken guage for tonight....get it fixed when you can, tho....just to give yourself valid info.
If you have a timer on the pump....then probably from around 3:00AM 'til an hour or two after daylight should do it. If it's a two speed or variable speed simply leave it on 'til you are confident the water in the pipes won't freeze.
