I may end up replacing my 10 year old Pentair 400K heater and wonder if anyone out there has a suggestion as to who is bulding the best heaters these days (and why they think their suggestion is the best). Thanks.

I concur with Scott on both the Pentair/Sta-Rite and Aqua-Cal units. Lochinvar also makes a great heater for the money. More expensive than the Mastertemp but more efficient as well.
A single 400K BTU gas fired heater unit can heat up to 60,000 gal pool if it's uncovered. Covered is close to 100,000 gallons.
If you have an attached spa, say normal size (about 400 gallons) it will heat it from 80 to 100 in about 15 minutes.

I'm thinking of getting one at the end of this coming summer.
I still have to build an outdoor kitchen and then get the gas company to drop of an LP tank. After that I can run lines everywhere.
