Hayward cartridge filter tie rod

Hi, I was curious to see if this has happened to any other pool owners that own a Hayward cartridge filter. The filter is approximately 3 and a half years old. Over the past year, the tie rod has become very rusty. Any explanation as to how this could have happened?

Acid bath!

Has your pH dropped below 7.0 for any extended period? (usually trichlor pucks cause this) Or, did you acid wash the entire assembly? - acid isn't good for the fabric of the carts, so should only be done if there is a known calcium issue :!:
