Greetings everyone, sharing today’s test results below. What are your thoughts?
FC-8.5
CYA-56
PH-8
CC-0
total chlorine-8.5

all seem a little high? Current supplies - muriatic acid, 3” chlorine tabs and bleach.

should I test any others now?

i am having to brush off algae every other day. The rains have stopped here but I have to refill several hundred gallons of well water each week. 3-4” water loss or more a week. 90+ degree daily temp should be ending soon.

DE pressure gauge is currently at 20. May need to recharge the DE to get rid of the algae??

the water fountain is off so no arial spray.

Cheers, Eric

Welcome to the forum!

Have you checked your pool for a leak? The amount of water you are adding each week in your climate is concerning.

With algae you should follow the SLAM Process procedure. Lower your pH to 7.2 (can you provide your TA results?) and use SLAM level FC based on [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA].

Welcome to TFP! Good to have you here :)

When trouble-shooting, it's always a good idea to start with a full set of test results, so with your next post, include them all. Given that you have well water, you might want to get iron and copper tested at a pool store, though it's not critical unless you have a history of staining. Those don't need to be tested again unless there's an issue, and if you stay away from use of copper based algaecides.

If you can see algae, you probably need to SLAM Process. You can find out for sure by doing a Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

If you see more than 50 ppm CYA, we just call it 60 (i.e. round up to nearest 10). Your FC is not overly high, and should certainly be never lower than 4 or 5 per the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]. I would not use any tabs/pucks/powder for FC because those add CYA, and the presence of algae suggests you need to SLAM which is a bit easier to do at lower CYA levels.

3" to 4" loss of water per week is on the high side so you may want to do a bucket test to rule out a leak, found here: Pool School - Leak Detection. Every chance it's just splashout or evaporation from water features, but may as well find out.

Thank you for your replies and guidance!!

I have retested and hopefully included all of them needed for analysis.

Ph-7.6 added acid to bring down to 7.2
FC-7.5
combined chloramines-0
total chlorine-7.5
calcium hardness-175 seems low if recommended to be (250-400)
TA-130 tad high if recommended to be (100-120)
CYA-50

i am currently topping off the pool now to conduct the bucket test starting this afternoon. Will also get an iron and copper test done at the pool store since I am using large quantities of well water. Today I will make a bleach run and review procedures for SLAM and I will review the overnight CH loss test.

Thanks for letting us know all the numbers.

pH of 7.5 to 7.8 is good. I wouldn't correct it until it goes over 7.8

Adding around 75 ppm of CH is a good idea. Otherwise it looks good.

Here's your numbers in the preferred format here at TFP. It's a bit easier for everyone if we all do it the same.

FC 7.5
CC 0.0
pH 7.6
TA 130
CH 175
CYA 50

Looking forward to watching your progress. It sounds like you're picking this up quickly and getting everything on track.

Thank you. I am learning a lot here. Now I have the bucket test results. I filled the pool almost to the top of the tile. Then filled a 5 gallon bucket almost to the top and placed it in the pool on the first step. Marked inside and outside water levels. Operated the pool normally for 24hrs. Inside dropped about a 1/4 inch and outside dropped an inch. Had the pool replastered and tiled with diamond rite 5 months ago. Wife says she noticed me filling up the pool more often since then. No water noticed anywhere there is above ground plumbing, pumps or filters. I will discuss with the pool store who contracted the work out.

I will have issues balancing the water and/or SLAMing if I don’t get this leak addressed.

Yes fountain is off. And I forgot to mention there is a small return from spa to pool. Sort of like a 2 inch water fall - outlet to the pool - about 10” wide.

I have have a leak specialist coming tomorrow morning to test. Will share the results. And thanks again.

Technically, the spa overflow should be off during a bucket test as well, but it sounds like your difference is greater than what the spillover would evaporate. Good luck with it. I hope it's easy and/or the contractor backs you up.

Well I had 3 leaks. 1 in each of in the collars of the drains in the spa and one spot around the tile that was missing grout. He repaired them with some epoxy. Now pool is off for at least 24 hrs.

Will retest water after I turn the pump back on. Will prep for SLAM.

Thank you again.
