Commercial Tile Cleaning

Mineral deposits have built up on our above-the-waterline tiles. We're thinking of hiring a professional cleaner. We're informed that the process involves pressure washing with a stream of water-suspended abrasive grit. I'm concerned about the effect of the abrasive on our pump, heater and filter. Has anyone had any experience with this?

We’ve used kierserite (magnesium sulfate) blasting (air pressure). It’s hardness is similar to calcium scale but much less than tile glaze. It’s called MaxxStrip. Unfortunately it does leave some sulfates behind in the water (even though you can vacuum a good amount of it up and out) so you have to do a heavy water exchange to ensure that the sulfate levels are low.

Glass media in water is used as well but can be far more abrasive on tile. Usually you don’t run the pool while the tile is being cleaned and the tile cleaners vacuum out debris and blasting media. If they don’t have a separate vacuum setup to do that, then I’d look for a company that does. You really don’t want them vacuuming all that waste into your filter.
