Corrosion on the copper heat exchanger (on the outside)

I have a new typical gas heater that, prior to closing last week, has run for a couple of months in our new pool. I removed the top cover of the heater, and noticed the outside of the copper heat exchanger coils, there is some corrosion starting (small amounts of green stuff). It's mainly on the copper fins. Is this normal for copper to corrode like this, and if so, how long do the copper heat exchangers usually last (assuming running for a couple of months in the spring and fall)?

It's normal for copper to build a corrosion film. If it's pitting andeating away the metal that's another thing and you need to have it checked.

I wouldn't expect more than about 30 years out of it. Seriously, they last a long time if properly cared for.

What would be the difference visually between a corrosion film, and the other condition you mentioned "pitting and eating away"?

The pitting & eating away is just like it sounds. If you see pitting or the fins being eaten away then it's serious. Discoloration is normal.
