My husband plumbed the (AG) pool so that in winter he removes all attached pipes, etc from the pool. In past, we've drained it down well below skimmer...but now I wonder why? If water goes into the skimmer, it just dumps out onto ground. Same with the return. Water will run down a short plastic pipe then onto ground. Do we need to drain much below skimmer?

It's an issue for freezing - the ice can move up the pool wall and damage the skimmer parts. That being said, I have an Aquadoor and don't drain at all and have been lucky enough not to have had any ice damage. I've always believed my pool has frozen under the cover (but I've never checked.) The water on top of the cover has frozen solid - several inches thick (I'm bad about keeping the cover free of water)
