Opening filthy swampy pool and testing

After my meltdown last fall, I swore I would not open my pool this year but I'm working on it now. I forget a lot from season to season. My pool is half full of green swampy water. I've purchased a robot that doesn't run off the filter and it's getting a workout. My filter and pump are not attached yet and I want to start to add water while I'm attaching it. Should I test the swampy water before adding clean water? Thank you!

If it's half full and swampy, why not just drain the rest of it and scoop out the debris?

Vinyl liner pool. Do not drain past the top of the lowest step in the shallow end.

We have a well and we have to fill it slowly, plus it uses a ton of electricity so it's not really an option.
