The link doesn't have the chemistry exactly right since you can take sodium out of the equation and there is no "cold solution of sodium hydroxide" and most of the chlorine gas dissolves into water to form hypochlorous acid, for example, but it's not bad. I wrote what goes on chemically in The Deep End where all such technical (or controversial) posts belong. Read this post I wrote for a more accurate representation of what goes on in both manually dosed pools and in saltwater chlorine generator (SWG) pools. Feel free to wander into other parts of The Deep End to satisfy your (fellow) nerdy desires.
