Yikes! I would like to know exactly what they were mixing together that caused an explosion to happen. Want to make sure I never do it!
probably chlorine and acid...we all know they don' t play well together...
On a serious note...NEVER add cheimcals together even in your pool water...please wait at least 15-30 mins between additions of any kind of chemical.

I agree, it probably was chlorine and acid.
I learned the hard way to make sure you know what's in whatever you pour into chlorine. I mixed up some dishwashing soap w/ undiluted 6% bleach once, and had a nice frothy dishwashing suds volcano going out of my pump-up sprayer. The plastic sprayer body was very warm to the touch as well. Even got some nice little puffs of something coming out of the top.

My guess is that cal hypo was involved since it is the most reactive form of chlorine.
A friend of mine suffered severe burns on her face from mixing chemicals when she first got her pool.
I still don't know what the exact concoction was she had mixed up.
