filter is putting sand in the pool

Hello,
I have a Hayward 1hp sand filter for my 10,000 above ground pool. I have noticed that I have quite a bit of sand on the floor, and always blamed it from when I placed a bag of sand (which I removed) to keep my wedding cake steps down. After vacumming the sand up, we placed a panty hose over the return and found the sand (plus some other dirt) were being returned into the pool. Please suggest what to do next, (although please speak slower.....like a 2nd grader, I'm new to this and get easily overwhelmed with machinery talk )

Make sure it is sand first, if it is sand you will be able to pick it up with your fingers.

It's sand. I can pick it out with my fingers, its the coarse pool filter sand that went into the filter.

Make sure you use the Rinse cycle after backwashing.

It sounds like a damaged lateral or valve seat gasket. unless the sand is a very very fine grit on a new installation.
