3/4 hp single speed pump selection

So what is your favorite brand/model and why? This will be for my 6000 gallon FB inground pool build. I have desperately wanted a variable speed but it makes absolutely no financial sense in my application.

So, Tell me your stories and share experiences. Please!

What about a 2 speed? They usually run a bit less in terms of cost vs a VS. Here is an up rated 1 HP two speed:

But given the cost of a new build, why do you say a VS makes no financial sense. It isn't much of a increase given the money you are already spending.

I just don’t see any point. There will be very little return on investment. Before I get too deep, the nail in the coffin for vs is due to the automation system I chose. It only works with single speed pumps. It is a simple system and that’s how I want to keep it. Also, in Canada I can get a 3/4 hp for about $450 Canadian. Vs pumps are 3 times that. But again, I’m kinda set on this automation system.

1/3 or 1/2 hp should do you, at that wattage single speeds are cheap

Hayward, Pentair, Jandy. It doesn't really matter. Reliability in pumps is primarily dependent on the motor and not the wet end. But pump manufactures only make the wet end and use motors from motor manufactures.

and I doubt they use American made Leeson or Baldor right.

Nooo! Emerson, Nidec (US Motors), Regal-Beloit (AO Smith/Century). Pretty much all are made in China or Mexico these days.

But you can get a two speed with the switch in the back for a little bit more:

Running on low speed would save about 75% in energy costs. You will easily make up the cost difference in a season or two.

Looking on that site, the cheapest pump was $350-$400 and the cheapest 2 speed was $530. The $350 pump was 1 hp.....

Drive 2hrs to Buffalo, buy a pump, put it in the trunk under some luggage and loose clothes and save some money....

Take a day off work, Drive 2 hours, at $6 a gallon. Buy in us funds @ 30% exchange rate. Pay 13% duty at border. Drive home at $6 a gallon. HahAhahahaha

2 hrs at 60 mph I guess, 120 miles X2, 240 / 15 mpg x 6 = $96

$300 pump , I guess x 1.3 = $390

Add 13% = $50.70

= $536

Fun times crossing the border, priceless!

Fill up in the us side for $3 a gallon, bring a drum!

Can’t help you on the gasoline. You guys simply pay way too much for it.

I don't lie to border guards. They will flag me and every time I cross it will be a 2 hour ordeal.

I just ordered my pool lights from the US as they were not available in Canada. $1200usd. my PayPal was charged just under $1600 Canadian and when Mr UPS gets here, I will have to hand him 13% on the 1600. lol

Isn't the difference in price just a reflection of the exchange rate?

The same pump is listed as $429.99 on a CA site:

The ratio is 1.27 which is actually a bit lower than the true exchange rate so the CA pump is a slightly better deal. Although shipping might be different.

It depends on many factors I am sure. When exchange rate was at par consumer goods were still 10 -20% higher here.

With the exception of a few things like beer. lol. I think it's around $50 for a case of beer and that doesn't improve with a strong dollar.
