Trouble using the vacuum

I finally have everything under control in my pool and confident on keeping it clear water bt I am struggling with getting my vacuum to work. I start out by putting the head into the water and slowly submerging the tube to get it full of water. I then hook it up to my pool pump through the skimmer box. I just cannot get the gun in the bottom to suck up. There is plenty of pressure when the pump is running for the filter.
I bought a new hose and new skimmer box and hookup for the vacuum.

Am I missing something?

Also make sure your DE filter is not too dirty. It takes a little more oomf to run a vacuum than to just filter water. When my DE filter has a psi rise of more than 6 above normal, it doesn't have enough power to suck efficiently. It will still filter o.k. at that level though. When I have just cleaned and replaced the DE there is nothing that vacuum won't suck up!
