backwashing

One more question....

Last week we finally got around to backwashing for the first time since we hooked everything up end of June.

When we backwashed I would say about 5+ cups of the sand also came out. Is this normal? Everything seems to be working fine....I just wasn't expecting that for some reason.

Also just wanted to say that my water has been crystal clear all summer so far!

If the sand filter is new it is probably normal.
As long as the sand coming out is a very fine grit it is normal, if the sand coming out looks exactly the same as the stuff you put in then there is a problem. With new filter installations it is normal to get increasingly less amounts of very fine grit sand coming from the backwash

It seems to me to be the same sand as what we put into the filter. hmm....but it stopped coming out. Should I try backwashing again to see if it does it again or is there a problem we should fix first?

After you backwash, don't forget to rinse for a minute or so to settle the sand back down in the filter, or some sand may come out into the pool
