I am in the process of changing my intex setup over to sand filter. Right now I have a 1hp pump hooked to the intex B size filter. Is there anything to put in the pump basket to help with filtering small stuff?

No, pump baskets are designed to give the pump the flow it needs yet screen out the stuff that could get stuck in the impeller. Your filter is the componet to remove the small particles from the water.
