Please help save me $$$ as pool pump only hums

Hi all,

My first post.

My pool pump (A.O. Smith) does not start only hums for 5-7 seconds before shutting down. The pump will only start if I tap it a few times. There is some corrosion around the exterior of the pump.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hi, welcome to TFP! Is it corrosion or is it rust? Could you give us more details about the motor? Brand and model number for the pump would help if you can't find the model number of the motor.

I am not sure why my reply message didn't show up.

1. It's rusting
2. The motor is A.O. Smith # UST1072, 3/4HP.
3. The pump is Hayward SP..... I couldn't read the rest.

I see that you are moderator I accidentally posted this thread on the wrong location. Would you be able to move it to pump area? Thank you.

The motor doesn't have a start capacitor on it. Rust may be binding the shaft, or getting into the windings. Once that happens the motor is pretty much shot. Sounds like it is time to replace the motor. This would be a replacement motor: A.O. Smith Round Flange 3/4 HP Up Rate Motor - UST1072 - INYOPools.com

It should have a capacitor under the back cover.

Thanks James W, you saved me a few bucks. I replace the capacitor and it started working. The old lady is now happy.
