I'm using bleach now for both maintaining levels as well as shocking, but it sure would be easier to have a big bucket of shock around! I've read the labels over and over and cant find out whether there is CYA in the granules as in the tablets. If it is in there, will it increase the levels over time as much as the tablets will?

Depends. There are 3 primary types of granular chlorine-
1- Dichlor- Yes, it's stabilized. Quite a bit of stabilizer actually. It can raise CYA in short order.
3- Calcium Hypochlorite- No stabilizer, but adds calcium to the water. Your pool may or may not need it, and too high levels of calcium can cause water clarity issues as well as more frequent DE filter cleanings (in my experience).
4- Lithium Hypochlorite- No stabilizer, not as much chlorine as other options but the probably the most costly form of chlorine available.

hmmm... so if my cya levels are where I want them the bleach is probably a pretty good option for shocking?
