I have recently read about people adding salt to a non-SWG pool because they like the feel of the water. Does anyone know about this? And can it upset the balance of the pool?

No issues with the balance.
Many target around 2000ppm without a SWG. You should test before you add any though. Mine is almost up to 1000ppm and I have not added salt and been using bleach this year.

I prefer the Taylor salt titration test. But there are strips that are ok. You really do not need to be exact.
