Last night, after manually vacuuming, I backwashed my filter, then turned the the multi port back to filter and I saw what looked like DE coming out of the returns. Is this indicative of a problem with the filter or multi port?

D.E. out of the return lines indicates you've got something wrong with your grids, manifold, or possibly even that little stem pipe o-ring. Clean off your grids and do a thorough inspection for holes, tears, cracks, etc. Even small holes will cause a problem.
