been running for 6-7 weeks. dichlor+bleach. had to bump ph down with hcl every 5 days or so (kids medicine syringes from pharmacy awesome for dosing 5.5ml ). Question is test kit fas/dpd has never shown combined chlorine over 1ppm. usually .5 to trace. am I screwing up the test? free chlorine never dropped to 0.

No, you're not screwing up at all. Some pools and spas just never hit the zero for CCs. If everything else is in line, don't sweat it.
You might find leaving the cover open during sunny days improves the CCs to zero as the UV from the sun helps burn off CCs.

was more worried that I never saw higher. I've never checked right after use, concerned I was not testing correctly
new to this. low/no cc means I've got this sanitation thing. good. guess I've read too many horror stories, bad advice, etc. that was expecting to see it, and then have it ramp down.
Ideally we would all love Zero CCs all the time, but some pools and spas seem to want to baffle us with at least 0.5ppm. Don't beat yourself up over it, we don't know why. Any more than that though suggests a problem which needs to be addressed.
