help, my pool water turned brown when I added chlorine, told it may be reaction from iron in well water with the chlorine, please help

Sure sounds like iron. You have two options: First, drain it and have water hauled in, or second, add a good quality metal sequestrant like Jack's Metal Magic to deal with the iron. The metal sequestrant is not a permanent fix though.
