Distance Between Pool Drains

The actual rule is a little bit tricky to explain. One way to simplify it is that a board 29" long shouldn't be able to cover both drain covers. That isn't exactly right, but it is reasonably close. Because this dimension has increased over the years, most builders put their drains further apart than that to allow for any future increases.

funny this came up. I just recently saw a picture of a pool with two main drains (parents were looking at houses to move). I had never heard of or seen that before. besides increased circulation, what is the reason for two? less suction so less chance of entrapment?
