Calcium buildup - water line - bead blasting?

I have a 20,000 gunnite pool with ceramic tile at water line where calcium line buildup is appreciable and can't be removed with commercial cleaners. I've read poly bead blasting is efficient, best method for removing/cleaning and wondering if anyone has experience with doing this job themselves and how best to go about it? I've read on line, beads float, get collected in skimmers and another report of beads sinking get caught pulled into pump and create havoc?
Does the pool need to be completely drained to do this right ?
Is this a job an experienced do-it yourselfer can do with a little bit of advise/learning before hand or better left for commercial service?

Any/all comments and lessons learned appreciated.
