It depends on how your water flow is affected by the increased pressure, but typically you have to backwash after an increase of 5-10 psi.

My Hayward filter instructions suggest backwashing when pressure increases 6-8 psi over the "clean pressure".
On my setup, I seem to "hang" right at 15psi (right now after new sand and first backwash). I'll usually backwash when it get's to the 20-23 psi range.
