Do I need Metal Gon?

I have always used it - now I am wondering if I really need it or if I have been adding it just because.

We have city water - no problem with brown water ever

I am planning to drain/clean/refill our small 245 gall Hotspot this weekend. Do I need a $9 bottle of Metal Gon?

Probably not. I wouldn't use any product like that one unless you are sure you need it.
