my chlorine test only goes to 5ppm. is there any way to use this test to read higher levels without getting a new test kit?

By far the best thing to do is to get a FAS-DPD chlorine test, which will measure FC and CC up to 50 in steps of 0.2 or 0.5.
You can get by with the kit you have up to a point by using dilution. Mix some pool water with an equal quantity of chlorine free water (typically distilled water), test that, and then multiply the result by two. However, the precision when using 1 to 1 dilution is half of what it is when the test is performed without dilution.
