changing the settings on filter head

When changing say, from 'filter', to 'backwash' or any such changes on the filter head, does one need to turn off the pump each time you want to move the dial, or can you just move the dial with the pump running??

Always turn off the pump. Always move the lever in one direction only....counterclockwise or clockwise. It'll tend to stay seated better
