Purple martins

Gotta show Skippy this pic... he loves birds... he needs a birdhouse like this. Are Purple Martins really their name? Are they particular in some way...?

Martins are beautiful birds. They look like little stealth fighters with their sharp wings and notched tails.

I wish they would stay longer. I put the house up March 1st as usual and they showed up the same day. They will usually be headed back to Brazil by July 4th.
They actually just quit using the houses and roost in trees once the young fledge. They still hang around for a while. I fledged 73 two years ago, but numbers have been down the last two years.
I wonder if we have those here in Georgia?

When I check the nests, I write with a wax pencil on the lid how many eggs and how many babies are in each gourd. I had 77 hatch, and when I cleaned the gourds out I found 4 dead.
