Whats wrong with the water

Neighbor has a custom hot tub and has had problems keeping the water nice.
I finaly helped him to get it cleared up with some good shocking and Ph control.
He called me a couple days ago and said the Ph was down a little bit, and I said that was normal when you use trichlor tabs in a floater, and told him to get a box of borax and that would bring it up, and then keep a close eye on it everyday. Today I went over and used the taylor 2005 test kit and got something weird. The fc test looked good for a few seconds and then the purple just vanished to clear. So I did the cc test and the water in the tube turned a brown rusty color.
what the keck is going on. Ph was right on 7.5 but I couldn't even get the alkalinity test to show up right. HELP!!

Hi I have some questions...

Is this the FAS-DPD test? If so, how many scoops of powder did you add?

Or is the DPD chlorine test from the K-2005 kit?

What did you use to shock the pool and how much did you add?

How many gallons is the hot tub?

Having never used this particular test, is it likely to "bleach out" or react strangely if the FC is thru the roof? He mentioned the TA test being odd too...

FC is very high. You witnessed classic DPD colof flash and bleachout.
I bet the TA test was blue instead of green and turned yellow instead of red.

Trichlor is not o good choice for a hot tub because it dissolves too fast in hot water.

How many gallons is the hottub? You may be better off just draining it and starting over with fresh water.

He might have use MPS to shock the water with, would that cause it to do that?

What realy concernes me is that the cc test turned brown..

I thought I read MPS registers as high CCs..that could explain the brown, couldn't it?
