CYA testing question

I opened the pool two weeks ago. The water was so cloudy/bit green so I shocked it (it is all good now). At the time, I only tested/added salt and bleach to the shock level. I didn't add any CYA. I just assumed it at the good level when I closed the pool in the last winter. I only tested/added CYA later when the water seemed clear, CYA level almost zero.


Would it be accurate if testing CYA when water is cloudy? Should I test/add CYA before start shocking it?

The CYA level will test ok if the water is cloudy.

TFP recommends CYA level of about 30 when "shocking' or SLamming it. The reason for that is to preserve the chlorine so it isn't burned off by UV from the sun.
