Coming back from a miserable fail at a first pool closing.

So I closed our pool for the first time last year and failed miserably. Between new born and work I wasn't able to give any attention to it in person until last week. Took me about 7 days (would have been quicker I think if I could have stayed with it during the process) but she came back pretty good.

What I came home to

Seeing how I didn't install the pool until late in the season last year I'm encountering some new to me nuances, i.e. Magnolia blooms clogging up my sand filter. Not really clogging it but significant flow reduction. So I've been having to rinse and back wash a lot more often to keep the flow rate up. Anybody have any suggestions on how to keep the small/fine blooms like that from making their way past all the strainers?
