New to pools and have some questions.

To start off I know nothing about pools other than what I have read here, so please bear with me. I have a friend that I work for on weekends. He has the pool listed in my signature. He also has no clue about pools and wanted some help. He is not an internet person so I decided that i would try to help him out. I found this forum and WOW what a wealth of info. So first off thanks for being here.

I just received a TF100 test kit but have not been to his house to test the water yet. I do know that the pool store sold him some of the trichlor tabs to put in his chlorine feeder and that the water is blue but somewhat cloudy. There is a brownish/tan stain all around the pool that is most likely due to some of the fill water containing iron.
My plan Saturday morning when I get there is to test the water and then go shopping for supplies to attempt to get the water balanced per instructions in pool school. However I have one problem. He does not have a computer or internet access.
Is there any way to do the calculations by hand instead of using the http://www.poolcalculator.com ?
    Once again thanks in advance.

if you know anyone with a itouch or iphone...I believe jason has an app...not sure if there is one for blackberry as well....also, I know it's 2009 and most folks have forgotten about dial-up, but do you have access to dial-up via phone connection?

Sadly no iPhone and no land line. I have a plain old cell phone and so does he. I guess I could have my wife stay at home and have her wait for me to call to punch in the numbers. So there is no way to calculate that info? Seems like there has to be some math behind the webpage.

red...I figured it out...if you have internet explorer...click on file...then save as...save the webpage on your hd and you should be all set...I just tried it, shutting off my wireles and worked, except I had to re-input my gallonage and setting...the app just reset itself...not sure if Jason approves of this method, but I'm sure if you make a little donation on his poolcalc website, he wouldn't mind

these are not exactly the same forumulas used in the pool calculator but I have been using them for quite a while on my customer's pools and my own and they work just fine. All you need is these pages printed out and a calculator!
    http://www.poolhelp.com/SimplifiedDosageFormulas.pdf
    http://www.poolhelp.com/SimplifiedFormulaNumbers.pdf

Once you master the forumula on the first page you can plug in any of the numbers on the second page that are not on the first one if you need them.

There is only one formula for all the calculation, the only thing that changes is the number you divide the volume of the pool by (call it the magic number
(Volume in gallons รท magic number) x ___ ppm desired change = ___ pounds or quarts of chemical needed.
