Hair nets for Skimmer Basket

I read that hair nets, used in skimmer basket ,help keep the small debris from making its way to filter. Could one also use a hair net in the pump basket? Is this frowned upon? Overkill? All the small debris from trees that surround my yard, are driving me crazy.

Pump basket is not recommended because of the greater possibility of running the pump dry.
