Do I need a PVC Side Mount Pool Filter if I have a separate Backwash valve?

Im going to replace my pool filter and my current setup does not have at PVC Side Mount Pool Filter but the new filter comes with one. Do I need it? What is it for?

I have a separate Hayward backwash vale installed that does the trick.

That valve is only used for backwashing. If the filter comes with a push-pull valve OR a multi-port valve, then you don't need another one.
