Sealant paste application

Stupid novice question: Do pvc connector threads need to be dry before applying a sealant paste? I have a leak above the Polaris pump. Even though I've turned the Jandy valve off, water is still trickling out at this connection when we unscrewed it.

I'm thinking of using Rectorseal 5 or T2. Is one of these preferable over the other?

No, not particularly, a teflon based pipe dope will seal if there is some water present. Is this a union? Is there an o-ring? If there is an o-ring th pen no thread sealant is needed. A silicone o-ring grease should be used on the o-ring.

Thanks. I don't think there is an o ring. There was old teflon tape on the threads.

So do you think a small but steady trickle of water will be ok?

Yes, that should seal up fine. You can use pipe dope or teflon tape.
