    DE Filter Connection Question

Hi TFP experts.. New pool owner looking for advice and information on replacing my old Hayward DE Filter with a Pentair Quad DE. The question is what will I need or can I get by with the backwash valve in place. I have read where I can use the existing, need to change out to a Multi-port Valve or not have one all. Any assistance or recommendations on the easiest, best practice or less headache will be greatly appreciated.

    Re: DE Filter Connection Question

That valve won't work on a quad de filter. The unions won't match and the water flow goes the wrong way. The quad de flow is different from other de filters. It's actually the same flow direction as a sand filter.

Quad DE does not backwash well. It's better to just open it and hose down the filters.

I would recommend that you use a check valve between the pump and filter and use a three-way valve between the pump and filter so that you can go to waste if needed.

A quad de multiport would give you the option to go to waste, recirculate or backwash, so it's not a bad choice.

261055 2 in. MPV, for Triton Sand & Quad D.E. filters [SM 20-3], 7.5 in. Centerline is the correct multiport for a quad de.

    Re: DE Filter Connection Question

As JamesW alluded to, I have a QuadDE-100 and I never backwash. I simply tear it down twice per year and clean it. The only time I use my push-pull backwash valve is just before opening it up to clean, I backwash the filter for a minute or so to blow most of the junk off the quad cartridges, then I open it up and clean it all out. It's a lot easier if you backwash it first before trying to lift out the cartridges all loaded down with wet DE. The nice part about not backwashing regularly is that you don't have to guess at how much DE to add. If you tear it down twice per year then you just add the recommended startup amount of DE which, for the QuadDE-100 is 10 lbs. So, every year I use 20 lbs of DE, that's it....no extra DE costs, no guessing, no fooling around with DE every month. The QuadDE filters are amazing in that you can run them quite dirty and not lose flow. To be honest, I forgot to do the cleaning in September of last year and my filter has been running for a year now without ever backwashing....and it still runs fine. Not that I'm suggesting you do that but just to give you an idea for how forgiving these filters are and how bogus the "you must backwash once per month..." claim is made by every pool service guy I've ever spoken to about it....

    Re: DE Filter Connection Question

Thank you Matt and James! I have a Pentair 2 VST and 9-10K pool. I found a deal on the Quad DE 60 or do I pay the extra $200 for Quad 80. Good with puzzles - any photos or directions for the new connections with and without the Multiport Valve for self install?

Bigger is always better in the world of filters. If you can afford to upgrade it, I would definitely go with the QuadDE-100. With that filter size, you will likely never have to backwash and you can simply tear the filter down twice per year.

    Re: DE Filter Connection Question

Getting ready to place order.... What is the difference between the Pentair 261050 and 261055 valves? I can not find the advantages or disadvantages of these and are priced the same.

    MultiPort 261055 - 2 in. MPV, for Triton & Quad D.E. filters [SM 20-3], 7.5 in. Centerline
HiFlow 261055 - 2 in. MPV, for Triton Sand & Quad D.E. filters [SM 20-3], 7.5 in. Centerline

    Re: DE Filter Connection Question

Either one should work equally. However, my preference is the 261055.
